En accueillant jusqu’au 14 janvier 2018 des œuvres exceptionnelles de la Fondation Blachère, la Ville d’Avignon fait le pari audacieux d’offrir ses lieux patrimoniaux comme écrin aux 76 œuvres magistrales des plus grands artistes contemporains africains. Un dialogue unique, inattendu, à découvrir tout au long d’une déambulation au travers des musées de la Ville. /  Au Palais des Papes, en partenariat avec Avignon Tourisme, sont présentées des œuvres majeures telles que Confluences, monumentale tapisserie métallique du ghanéen El Anatsui, Egg Fight, grande installation de l’anglo-nigérian Yinka Shonibare MBE ou encore Solipsis de l’artiste sud-africain Wim Botha. Dans le Cloître Benoît XII, les silhouettes longilignes en fer à béton du sculpteur sénégalais Ndary Lo forment un ensemble, en hommage à cet artiste, l’un des tout premiers de la collection. Dans la salle du Grand Tinel au Palais des Papes sont données à voir deux œuvres de Moustapha Dimé, artiste sénégalais de l’île de Gorée. Le cloître du Petit Palais accueille une œuvre de Diagne Chanel, Une saison au Sud Soudan, l’une des cinq artistes femmes de l’exposition. Comme un signal se dresse sur l’esplanade du Palais des Papes une œuvre monumentale de Ndary Lo. Le musée Calvet abrite quatre œuvres d’Ousmane Sow, ce grand sculpteur sénégalais mort en décembre 2016. Au musée Lapidaire un éléphant en taille réelle du sud-africain Andries Botha est au centre d’une installation visuelle.

Avignon becomes the capital of contemporary African art

Until January 14, 2018, the City of Avignon displays 76 outstanding works from the Blachère Foundation. Master works by the greatest contemporary African artists enter into unexpected dialogue throughout the city. Discover the enlightened solar nature of the great contemporary African artists who take over the Papal city and its majestic palace of stone as you explore Avignon and its museums. The Palace of the Popes, in partnership with Avignon Tourisme, is the setting for works such as Confluences, monumental metallic tapestry by Ghana artist El Anatsui, Egg Fight, large installation by the Anglo-Nigerian artist Yinka Shonibare MBE and Solipsis by South African artist Wim Botha. The long lean silhouettes in concrete wire by Senegal sculptor Ndary Lo form a whole in the Benedict XII Cloister, paying tribute to one of the very first artists in the collection. Two works by Moustapha Dimé, Senegalese artist from the isle of Gorea, are displayed in the Grand Tinel, inside the Palace of the Popes. The cloister inside the Petit Palais is the setting for Diagne Chanel, one of the five women artists in the show, with A Season in South Sudan.
And on the esplanade in front of the Palace of the Popes, a monumental work by Ndary Lo stands forth like a signal.
The Calvet museum displays four works by the great sculptor from Senegal, Ousmane Sow, who died in December 2016.The Lapidaire museum is home to a life-size elephant in the centre of a visual installation by South African artist Andries Botha. This disconcerting exchange between contemporary African creation and medieval architectural heritage is on display from May 19 through to January 14 2018.
