The Christmas Season
in Avignon

December 2019

Christmas also means dreams, poetry, discovery, imagination…
There are several performances, parades and concerts scheduled for the weekends, transforming the city into an ongoing sparkling stage.

Christmas in Avignon means a great deal more than just a great Christmas market to prepare your holiday receptions.

Christmas in Avignon… it’s the story of a maze, the story of lots of fun events proposed by shopkeepers and associations, tales and markets featuring creators’ work. Initiatives of all kinds to celebrate Advent and make way for children, the priority.

Folklore and traditions are also part of the Christmas celebrations. At the Church of the Célestins, the Christmas crèche will be on display. There too, the santon-makers village will go up, an important part of local heritage. At the Palais du Roure local historians welcome visitors and explain the crèche and the traditional Provençal Chritsmas table and “gros souper”, answering any questions. And our guides propose various visits and activities too.

Ernest Pignon Ernest

Palais des Papes   From June 29th to February 29th 2020

Artist Ernest Pignon-Ernest takes over the Great Chapel at the Palace of the Popes starting on 29 June and running until 29 February 2020. The exhibition, christened Ecce Homo and produced by the City of Avignon and Avignon Tourisme, goes back over Pignon-Ernest’s work and explores his artistic, intellectual and political involvement from the past 60 years.
A range of works from the gallery Lelong & Co, in Paris, from private collections, from the Montauban museum, and a photographic tribute to his prolific work in streets the world over, are displayed.

Nearly 400 works - photographs, collages, charcoal drawings and black ink – are on display, reflecting his work from 1966 to the present. Ernest Pignon-Ernest is considered to be the initiator of street art due in part to the large format images made with black stone and charcoal, to the collages that he has been making in the streets of cities and on the walls of cities, for nearly 60 years now.

He travels, draws on the encounters that come his way, makes sets for the theatre and paints portraits, posters, collages…thousands of works and always in a spirit of political and social involvement, defender of our collective memory and shared history.

The Great Escape
5 October to 21 December.

Dreamed up by Lionel Vivier, The Great Escape is a global project that looks in depth at the place of the image today. The hegemony of the image in this digital, post-Internet era has diluted photography in the flux of images with no territorial references, plethora of images leading to the constant transformation of what is real, uncertain and volatile. Through photography, video, 3-D sculpture, the artist gives us his melancholic and pictorial vision that lies somewhere between repetition and symbolic disintegration of what is real. In collaboration with the duo Gourau & Phong (Benjamin Roulet and François Bellabas).
